Solar Canopy Installation – Wharfedale Hospital

Client: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Project Value: £1.2 million
Location: Wharfedale Hospital, West Yorkshire
Completion: October 2023 – February 2025

Project Overview

PHP Projects was appointed to lead the delivery of a major sustainability initiative at Wharfedale Hospital, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and long-term energy costs. The project centred around the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on three purpose-built steel canopies positioned over the hospital’s main car park.

Scope of Works

1020 Solar PV Panels installed across three steel-framed car park canopies

5 x 66kW Inverters forming part of a high-efficiency renewable energy system

341,468 kWh Output Capacity, providing approximately 30% of the hospital site’s total energy requirement

Carbon Savings: 416 MWh of green energy generated to date, preventing 91,866 kg of CO₂ emissions—the equivalent of planting 5,558 trees in it’s first 18 months.

Our Role

PHP Projects provided end-to-end project management services, including:

Business Case Development: Collaborated with the Trust to build a robust business case demonstrating the environmental and financial benefits of the scheme

Funding Support: Helped secure funding by showing how the investment would support NHS Net Zero targets and become cost-neutral within a short timeframe

Procurement & Oversight: Managed all procurement and delivery phases to ensure value for money, system integrity, and operational continuity

Key Outcomes

Significant Progress Toward Net Zero: One of the largest solar installations of its kind within the NHS estate

Operational Efficiency: A reliable source of clean electricity, lowering utility costs and reducing grid dependency

Environmental Impact: Over 90 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided in the first 18 months of operation

Replicable Model: A scalable, cost-effective solution that can inform similar sustainability projects across the healthcare sector
