Project case study

Window Replacement Programme – Mental Health Unit

Client: NHS Foundation Trust
Project Value: £250,000
Location: North West England

Project Overview

PHP Projects was appointed to manage the delivery of a £250,000 window replacement scheme within a live Mental Health Unit. This project formed part of a wider infrastructure improvement programme designed to enhance safety, energy efficiency, and overall patient wellbeing in secure clinical environments.

Our Role

As project lead, PHP Projects was responsible for:

Construction Management: Coordinating all on-site activity to replace existing windows without disrupting clinical services or compromising patient safety.

Stakeholder Management: Engaging with facilities teams, clinical leads, and site operations to ensure works were planned around the needs of staff and service users.

Planning & Implementation: Developing and managing a phased programme of works tailored to the operational constraints of a live mental health setting.

Procurement: Managing the procurement of specialist contractors and materials in accordance with NHS Trust guidelines.

Challenges and Solutions

During the early stages of the programme, a honey bee nest was discovered within the fabric of the building. This unexpected ecological issue involved:

  • A nest containing over 70,000 bees
  • Approximately 25 pounds of honey

PHP Projects quickly engaged professional beekeepers to safely relocate the colony without delay to the construction programme. Our response demonstrated our agility in problem-solving and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Key Outcomes

  • Successful delivery of a live-environment replacement programme on time and within budget
  • Enhanced safety and environmental performance through upgraded infrastructure
  • Exemplary coordination across multidisciplinary teams, maintaining uninterrupted patient care
